Rev. Al Sharpton, the Founder and President of the National Action Network issued a statement today regarding President Joe Biden’s surprising decision to withdraw from the 2024 Presidential election.
According to a Post he stated that, “When Joe Biden first ran for President, he told me he was motivated by the ugliness of neo-Nazis and Klansmen marching in Charlottesville. As ballots got counted up, it became clear that the majority of Americans shared in his disgust.
As Biden went on to triumph over a fascist, racist president bent on using the power of his office to benefit nobody but himself, Biden went to work fulfilling his promise to heal our nation’s soul.”
Rev. Sharpton’s words capture the initial drive behind Biden’s candidacy, rooted in a deep reaction to the events of Charlottesville and a broader rejection of hate and division.
Biden’s presidency has been marked by significant efforts to address these core issues, reflecting his commitment to the promises made during his campaign.
“This was not the only campaign pledge President Biden followed through on. For the past three and a half years, the White House has made good on almost every single promise he’s made to Black America.
Whether it was his executive order on police accountability, answering our call for a summit on the rise of violent hate, or expanding healthcare access through the Inflation Reduction Act, the President heard Black America and acted.
That is on top of championing the protection of voting rights. And he did it all against relenting attacks by right-wing MAGA activists.”
Sharpton highlighted Biden’s concrete achievements, particularly those benefiting Black Americans. His administration’s efforts on police reform, combating violent hate, and expanding healthcare access have been significant milestones.
Furthermore, Biden’s unwavering stance on voting rights has been a cornerstone of his presidency, despite the fierce opposition from right-wing factions.
“President Biden has devoted most of his adult life to public service, he had more than paid his dues to our great nation.
But he saw what was at stake. This man answered the highest call of his career and saved our fragile democracy from destruction in the process. Our nation is on a better course, especially for Black and Brown Americans, thanks to the work of this Administration.”
Sharpton praised Biden’s long-standing dedication to public service, emphasizing the critical role he played in steering the nation away from potential democratic collapse.
The improvements seen under Biden’s leadership have set the country on a path of progress, especially for minority communities.
“We cannot forget the reality of a second Trump term is a real threat. The former president has gotten even more dangerous, emboldened by those he put in our nation’s highest courts.
With every hateful rhetoric and constant lies, he exposes his deep desire to use his office to exact revenge against anyone who stood against him and for democracy.”
Sharpton’s cautionary note underscores the looming threat posed by Donald Trump’s potential return to power. He warns of the dangers of Trump’s emboldened stance, supported by a judiciary shaped during his previous term.
The rhetoric and actions of the former president, according to Sharpton, signal a perilous desire for retribution and a disregard for democratic principles.
Rev. Sharpton’s statement not only acknowledges President Biden’s impactful tenure but also serves as a clarion call to recognize the stakes of the upcoming election.
Biden’s decision to step aside marks a pivotal moment in American politics, one that Sharpton and others will undoubtedly scrutinize and discuss in the days to come. For the full statement, visit the National Action Network’s website at nationalactionnetwork.net.
