Maintaining a longer and healthier life involves various factors, including diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices. However, one aspect often overlooked is hormone health, according to Dr. Mark Hyman, a physician who shared insights on his YouTube channel.

Hormones, acting as chemical messengers in the bloodstream, play a crucial role in coordinating different bodily functions, affecting growth, metabolism, sexual and reproductive functions, and mood.

Dr. Hyman highlights the potential impact on energy, motivation, concentration, and cognitive function if hormone health is neglected, specifically focusing on sex hormones, thyroid hormones, and growth hormones.

For men, Dr. Hyman emphasizes the importance of monitoring testosterone levels, suggesting that levels above 500 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL) are typical, but aiming for higher levels, around 600 to 900 ng/dL. Low testosterone levels can lead to various health issues, including low energy, motivation, concentration, libido, sexual function, and erectile dysfunction.

Lifestyle changes, such as a diet low in sugar and starch, increased consumption of healthy fats, avoidance of alcohol, and regular exercise targeting large muscle groups, can contribute to improved testosterone levels.

Addressing women’s hormone health, Dr. Hyman notes the complexity due to hormonal changes throughout life, such as menstrual cycles, menopause, and puberty. Environmental factors, stress, diet, and lifestyle choices can significantly impact hormonal balance.

Excessive estrogen, a common issue known as estrogen dominance, can result from factors like sugar consumption, lack of exercise, and exposure to environmental toxins. Dr. Hyman recommends reducing sugar intake, exercising regularly, and avoiding alcohol to address these concerns.

He further explains that indicators of elevated estrogen levels in women include heavy bleeding and severe menstrual cramps. Overall, Dr. Hyman encourages individuals to be proactive in understanding and optimizing their hormone health through lifestyle adjustments and regular testing.
