“In a tumultuous turn of events, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle found themselves seething with fury following the Queen’s Christmas broadcast in 2019, a moment that ultimately became the catalyst for their decision to break away from the royal family. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, feeling snubbed during the festive season, made the significant choice to step back as senior royals in 2020.

Having spent Christmas with Meghan’s mother in America in 2019, the couple’s discontent heightened during the Queen’s late broadcast. The monarch’s desk, adorned with family portraits, notably lacked a picture featuring Harry, Meghan, and their son Archie. Royal author Omid Scobie, shedding light on the Sussexes’ perspective, asserted that they perceived this omission as a familial conspiracy against them.

The couple, harboring a sense of long-standing marginalization within the institution, felt they were not considered a fundamental part of its future. Scobie, in his book ‘Finding Freedom,’ delves into this pivotal moment, citing the Christmas Day family photos displayed in the Green Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace during the Queen’s speech. Notably absent was a representation of Harry, Meghan, and Archie, while other portraits showcased the [Waleses], Charles and Camilla, Prince Philip, and a black-and-white image of George VI.

Despite palace sources insisting that the photo selection aimed to represent the direct line of succession, Harry and Meghan interpreted it as yet another indication that they needed to chart their course. This perceived exclusion fueled their resolve to step down from their royal roles, a decision officially announced in January 2020.

The couple relocated to Montecito in California, marking a momentous departure from the traditional royal trajectory as they sought independence and a life beyond the constraints of their former roles.”
