As searches for ‘home remedies for cough’ and ‘home remedies for sore throat’ surge in January, Tri Carragh engaged with an NHS doctor to delve into the potential health benefits of a hot toddy, specifically featuring a dram of whisky, in alleviating these common conditions.

Dr. Hana Patel, an NHS GP, suggests that a hot toddy possesses antiseptic properties, making it a suitable home remedy for ailments like colds, coughs, and sore throats. The warmth of the drink provides comfort and relaxation to the throat. Whisky, especially when combined with honey and lemon, offers soothing properties that alleviate sore throat discomfort and reduce coughing.

The alcohol content in whisky contributes to relaxation and potential sleep aid, while honey adds sweetness and soothes coughs. Fresh lemon juice provides vitamin C to relieve sore throats, and staying hydrated with fluids is crucial during illnesses. Additional ingredients like ginger, mint, and a pinch of cayenne pepper may offer anti-inflammatory, respiratory, and decongestive effects, respectively.

Dr. Hana notes that single malt whisky contains antioxidants, potentially decreasing ‘bad’ cholesterol, increasing ‘good’ cholesterol, and reducing triglycerides. Epidemiologic studies also associate alcohol consumption with a lower risk of coronary heart disease.

Whisky specialist Ryan McCafferty acknowledges the special place whisky holds for many as a source of comfort, especially during colder months. A hot toddy, with its soothing blend of Scotch whisky, honey, and lemon, not only eases the throat but also provides a sense of relaxation. Tri Carragh recommends a specific recipe featuring 60ml Scotch whisky, one tablespoon of honey, 22ml fresh juice, and 240ml hot water.
